Choosing the Correct Water-Cooled Spindle for Your CNC Router

Choosing the correct spindle is an important part of building or upgrading a CNC router. The spindle affects the tooling you can use, the type of work your machine can handle and how well the overall setup suits your application.

Water-cooled spindles are widely used on CNC routers because they offer smooth operation and use a separate water-cooling circuit to manage spindle temperature during machining.

CNC Online offers 1.5kW, 2.2kW and 3kW water-cooled spindle options, ranging from compact spindles for smaller machines to larger setups suited to more demanding CNC routing and production work.

This guide compares the available spindle sizes, VFD options, collet systems, mounting diameters and cooling requirements to help you choose the correct setup for your CNC router.

The correct choice is not simply the spindle with the highest power rating. Your machine size, Z-axis construction, spindle mount, tooling requirements, cooling setup and the type of work you intend to do should all be considered.

1.5kW Water-Cooled Spindle

The 1.5kW Water-Cooled Spindle is the most compact option in the CNC Online water-cooled spindle range.

It operates from 220V, draws approximately 6A and has a speed range of 0–24,000 RPM.

The spindle uses an ER11 collet system, with collet sizes available from 1mm to 7mm. It is available with either a 65mm or 80mm round body, allowing it to suit different spindle mounts and CNC router designs.

Where Does a 1.5kW Spindle Make Sense?

A 1.5kW water-cooled spindle is well suited to applications such as:

  • Engraving
  • Sign making
  • MDF routing
  • Timber
  • Plywood

  • Smaller components
  • Light to medium CNC routing
  • Smaller CNC router builds

For users who mainly work with smaller cutters and do not require the wider tooling range of an ER20 spindle, the 1.5kW option provides a compact and capable setup.

1.5kW VFD Options

The 1.5kW water-cooled spindle can be paired with either a 1.5kW YL VFD or a 1.5kW H100 Mini VFD.

Both VFDs provide adjustable spindle speed control and convert the 220V single-phase input into the three-phase output required by the spindle.

The YL Series provides a straightforward matched solution for customers who are familiar with the YL platform. The H100 Mini provides the required spindle control in a more compact package and would generally be our preferred option for a new installation where either VFD can be selected.

The H100 Mini itself supports a wider frequency range, but the 1.5kW spindle is rated for a maximum of 400Hz and 24,000 RPM and should be configured accordingly.

1.5kW Kit Includes

This makes it a convenient option for a new CNC router build or for upgrading from a smaller spindle system. The current 1.5kW Water-Cooled Spindle With VFD Kit is supplied with the YL VFD; the 1.5kW H100 Mini VFD is also available separately as an alternative VFD option.

2.2kW Water-Cooled Spindle

For many CNC routers, the 2.2kW Water-Cooled Spindle is the strongest all-round option.

It operates from 220V, draws approximately 8A and runs from 0–24,000 RPM.

The spindle uses an 80mm round body and moves from the ER11 system used on the 1.5kW spindle to the larger ER20 collet system, with metric collet sizes available from 1mm to 13mm.

That combination makes the 2.2kW spindle particularly versatile for general CNC routing.

Where Does a 2.2kW Spindle Make Sense?

The 2.2kW spindle is well suited to:

  • Furniture components
  • Cabinetry
  • Signage
  • MDF
  • Timber
  • Plywood
  • Plastics
  • Acrylic
  • Composites

  • Jigs and fixtures
  • Aluminium machining with suitable tooling and cutting parameters

For someone building a CNC router and unsure whether the 1.5kW spindle will provide enough flexibility, the 2.2kW model is generally the better long-term all-round choice.

You gain additional spindle capacity while keeping a relatively compact 80mm spindle body. The move to ER20 also gives you access to a wider range of tooling.

CNC Online Recommendation: For most general-purpose CNC router builds, the 2.2kW Water-Cooled Spindle With VFD Kit provides the best balance of spindle power, ER20 tooling capacity and overall versatility.

2.2kW VFD Options

The 2.2kW Water-Cooled Spindle With VFD Kit is available with two VFD options:

Both are suitable options for controlling the 2.2kW spindle.

The YL Series provides a straightforward CNC spindle control solution and is well suited to customers who are familiar with the YL platform.

The 2.2kW H100 Mini provides the required spindle control in a more compact VFD package. For a new build where either option can be selected, the H100 Mini would generally be our preferred choice, particularly where control-box space is important.

This does not mean the YL is the wrong option. Both can correctly operate the spindle when configured for the required spindle specifications.

It is also important to remember that although the H100 Mini VFD itself supports a wider frequency range, the 2.2kW spindle is rated for a maximum of 400Hz and 24,000 RPM and should be configured accordingly.

2.2kW Kit Includes

The 2.2kW water-cooled spindle is also fitted as standard to CNC Online's Pro Series CNC Routers, which gives a good indication of where this spindle sits within a complete CNC router platform.

3kW Water-Cooled Spindle

The 3kW Water-Cooled Spindle is the largest standard water-cooled spindle covered in this guide.

It operates from 220V, draws approximately 12A and provides a speed range of 0–24,000 RPM.

The 3kW spindle uses an ER20 collet system, with metric collet sizes available from 1mm to 13mm, and has a larger 100mm round body.

That larger physical size is an important consideration when choosing or upgrading a machine. The Z-axis and spindle mounting system need to be suitable for the larger spindle.

Where Does a 3kW Spindle Make Sense?

The 3kW spindle is better suited to applications such as:

  • Larger CNC routers
  • Production workshops
  • Furniture manufacturing
  • Cabinetry
  • Large timber components
  • Sheet processing
  • Plastics and composites
  • Aluminium machining with suitable tooling and parameters
  • Larger tooling
  • More demanding cutting operations
  • Regular production work

The additional spindle power is most useful when the rest of the CNC router is capable of taking advantage of it.

Installing a larger spindle on a light machine does not automatically allow the machine to make substantially heavier cuts. Machine rigidity, motion components, cutter selection, feed rate, depth of cut and workholding all remain important.

3kW VFD Options

The 3kW Water-Cooled Spindle With VFD Kit can be configured with:

The HY VFD provides a matched 3kW option for the spindle.

The H100 Mini range does not have a 3kW model, so the next suitable option is the 4kW H100 Mini.

Using a 4kW VFD does not mean the 3kW spindle should be operated above its rated specifications. The VFD must still be configured for the 3kW spindle's rated current, frequency and speed.

Both VFD options are suitable when correctly configured. For a new installation where the H100 platform is preferred, the 4kW H100 Mini is a particularly good option and provides a compact VFD solution.

The HY remains a suitable alternative for customers who prefer that VFD platform or already use HY VFDs in their CNC setup.

3kW Kit Includes

CNC Online's Elite Series CNC Routers use a 3kW water-cooled spindle as standard, pairing the larger spindle with a machine platform designed for more demanding CNC routing applications.

ER11 vs ER20 – What's the Difference?

Spindle power is not the only difference between the water-cooled spindle options.

The collet system determines the range of cutter shank sizes that can be held by the spindle.

The 1.5kW spindle uses ER11 collets, while the 2.2kW and 3kW spindles use ER20 collets.

ER11: 1mm to 7mm

ER11 is a compact collet system commonly used with smaller tooling. CNC Online stocks ER11 collets from 1mm to 7mm, including intermediate metric sizes.

It works well for:

  • Engraving cutters
  • Smaller end mills
  • Detailed carving tools
  • Smaller router bits
  • Light machining applications

For a compact CNC router that mainly uses smaller tools, ER11 may be all that is required.

ER20: 1mm to 13mm

ER20 is a larger collet system with a wider tooling range. CNC Online stocks ER20 metric collets from 1mm to 13mm, as well as selected imperial sizes.

This makes ER20 useful for CNC routers that need to move between smaller engraving cutters and larger routing or milling tools.

That additional tooling flexibility is one of the main reasons the 2.2kW spindle is such a strong general-purpose option.

If you expect your tooling requirements to increase as you take on different CNC jobs, moving to an ER20 spindle can be worth considering even if you do not immediately need the additional spindle power.

Spindle Diameter: 65mm vs 80mm vs 100mm

Spindle diameter is another specification that should be checked before ordering.

The water-cooled spindle options covered in this guide use:

  • 1.5kW: 65mm or 80mm
  • 2.2kW: 80mm
  • 3kW: 100mm

This is especially important when replacing or upgrading an existing spindle.

For example, changing from a 65mm 1.5kW spindle to an 80mm 2.2kW spindle will normally require a different spindle clamp.

Moving from an 80mm spindle to the 100mm 3kW spindle also requires a different clamp and places a larger spindle assembly on the Z-axis.

Before upgrading, check:

  • Spindle clamp diameter
  • Available Z-axis space
  • Z-axis rigidity
  • Clearance around the spindle
  • Machine structure
  • Cable and cooling pipe routing

The spindle needs to suit the machine mechanically as well as electrically.

How Does a Water-Cooled CNC Spindle Work?

A water-cooled spindle contains internal cooling passages through the spindle body.

Water is circulated through the spindle, carrying heat away while the spindle operates.

The cooling circuit normally consists of:

  • A water reservoir or dedicated cooling unit
  • Water pump
  • Cooling pipe
  • Spindle water inlet
  • Spindle water outlet

Water flows from the cooling system through the spindle and then returns to the reservoir or cooling unit.

Because the spindle does not rely on a shaft-mounted cooling fan, water-cooled spindles can provide a quieter spindle setup than comparable air-cooled designs.

The trade-off is that the cooling circuit adds additional components that need to be installed and maintained correctly.

Never Run a Water-Cooled Spindle Without Water Circulation

The cooling system should be running whenever the spindle is operating.

Before starting the spindle, check that:

  • The pump is operating
  • Water is flowing through the system
  • The pipe is not kinked or blocked
  • There are no significant leaks
  • The water level is sufficient

Running a water-cooled spindle without circulation can cause the spindle temperature to rise and may damage the spindle.


75W Water Pump or CW-3000 Water Chiller?

This allows a simple cooling circuit to be built using a suitable water reservoir.

Water is pumped from the reservoir through the spindle and then returned to the reservoir.

This is a simple and practical solution for many CNC router installations.

For customers who prefer a more self-contained cooling setup, CNC Online also stocks the CW-3000 Water Chiller.

The CW-3000 provides a dedicated water-circulation system that can be used with water-cooled CNC router spindles and can provide a cleaner installation than using a separate open reservoir and loose pump.

Choose the Standard Water Pump If:

  • You want a simple cooling setup
  • You already have a suitable reservoir
  • You want to use the cooling components included with the spindle kit
  • Your installation does not require a dedicated cooling unit

Consider the CW-3000 If:

  • You want a more self-contained cooling system
  • You prefer a neater permanent machine installation
  • You do not want to use an open water reservoir
  • The machine will form part of a more permanent workshop setup

Either method still requires correct water circulation whenever the spindle is operating.

Why Does a CNC Spindle Need a VFD?

YL, HY and H100 Mini VFD options for water-cooled CNC spindles

The 1.5kW, 2.2kW and 3kW water-cooled spindles covered in this guide are designed to operate using a Variable Frequency Drive, or VFD.

The VFD performs several important functions.

It provides the correct electrical output for the spindle and allows spindle speed to be controlled by changing the output frequency.

This makes it possible to adjust spindle speed according to:

  • Cutter diameter
  • Material
  • Feed rate
  • Type of machining
  • Required cutting conditions

The spindle and VFD must be correctly matched and configured.

Important parameters include:

  • Rated spindle voltage
  • Rated current
  • Maximum frequency
  • Maximum spindle speed
  • Acceleration and deceleration settings

Incorrect VFD settings can cause poor spindle performance or potentially damage the spindle.

If you are buying a complete spindle kit, selecting the supplied VFD option simplifies the process because the main components have already been matched for the application.

YL vs HY vs H100 Mini VFD

YL Series

The YL Series is used with the 1.5kW water-cooled spindle and is also available as an option with the 2.2kW spindle kit.

It provides the speed and frequency control required for these CNC spindles and is a straightforward option for standard spindle installations.

You can view the 1.5kW YL VFD or the 2.2kW YL VFD depending on the spindle size required.

HY Series

The 3kW HY VFD is available with the 3kW water-cooled spindle setup.

It provides a matched 3kW VFD option and remains a suitable choice for customers who already use or are familiar with the HY platform.

H100 Mini

The H100 Mini VFD is available in multiple power ratings, including 1.5kW, 2.2kW and 4kW 220V options suitable for the spindle sizes covered in this guide.

The 1.5kW H100 Mini can be used with the 1.5kW spindle, the 2.2kW H100 Mini with the 2.2kW spindle, and the 4kW H100 Mini can be configured for the 3kW spindle.

Its compact design makes it particularly useful where electrical cabinet or control-box space is limited.

For a new 1.5kW, 2.2kW or 3kW setup, the H100 Mini would generally be our preferred option where available, while the YL and HY models remain suitable alternatives.

The correct choice ultimately depends on the spindle, existing electrical setup and customer preference.

You want the best all-round spindle option for a general-purpose CNC router.

The combination of 2.2kW power, an 80mm spindle body, ER20 tooling from 1mm to 13mm, a 0–24,000 RPM speed range and the choice of 2.2kW YL or 2.2kW H100 Mini VFD makes it suitable for a wide range of hobby, professional workshop and general CNC routing applications.

For many CNC router builds, this is the spindle we would start with.

Choose the 3kW Water-Cooled Spindle If:

You have a larger, sufficiently rigid CNC router and want additional spindle capacity for larger tooling, demanding machining or regular production work.

The 100mm spindle body and larger overall spindle assembly mean machine compatibility should be checked before upgrading.

For machines designed around this size of spindle, the 3kW model provides a useful step up from the 2.2kW platform.

Need Automatic Tool Changing?


If your CNC router regularly uses multiple cutters in the same job, an Automatic Tool Change (ATC) spindle may be a better option than a conventional water-cooled spindle.
